“We’re not trying to turn everybody into performers. We’re trying to instill in students an appreciation and a love for art and an understanding of how it can change and enhance their lives, as we build the knowledgeable audiences of the future, help create a few professional artists, and everything in between. In my mind, participation in theater, music and dance should be a part of every person’s education, just as playing sports on an athletic team.” —Darcy Rice, Chair, St. Margaret’s Performing Arts Department

At St. Margaret’s, the arts are an integral part of academic instruction, strongly linked to core values that include character, community, and balance—balance that extends from the classroom to participation in arts and athletics, service to the community and co curricular experiences. Our students experience the full breadth of the arts, from performance to costume and lighting design, sound and special effects, writing, directing and choreography.
One goal shared by all four school divisions is to enable our young students to become confident, capable, socially conscious contributors to society. Performing arts instruction, on stage, backstage and in the audience, supports this goal.
As young performers wait on stage, the crowd will hush; as the curtain rises, the lights will come up and music will fill the theater. Afterward, as the curtain settles into place, the audience’s applause will be not solely for those students on stage, but for those students who designed the set and costumes, who raised and lowered the curtain, who directed the lighting, and those who choreographed and produced the performance. Standing ovations will be for students in the orchestra pit, for the student ushers, the students in the box office, and for the supportive peers, parents, and guests in the audience. This community interaction and culmination of arts instruction will help build students’ confidence, team working skills, and capabilities in a wide range of areas.
Successful performances will be supported by a full range of lighting, audio amplification with auto-mixing, video presentation, assisted listening, audio-visual recording and mixing capabilities, along with state-of-the art facilities for lectures and special presentations, all integrated in the Performing Arts Center’s design.
Support the important and integral role of the arts for St. Margaret’s. Join the Building on the Promise campaign in raising $22.5 million to turn the dream into a reality.
